Center Secures Funding for Another Four Years
The U.S. Department of Education has once again designated the Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center as both a National Resource Center and a FLAS fellowing-granting institution as a result of the most recent Title VI competition cycle.
Announcing the Area Studies Advancement Project (ASAP)
The Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center is embarking on a multi-year project to explore teaching and learning in an area studies context. This effort will harness IU's strengths and bring together faculty from multiple departments to reenvision the significance and nature of area studies.
William Fierman, Professor Emeritus in Indiana University's Department of Central Eurasian Studies and recent recipient of the Central Eurasian Studies Society Edward Allworth Lifetime Service to the Profession Award, discusses his interest in Central Asia and the substantial collection of newspapers from that region that he has collected over the years.
Fin(n)ishing Touches: On Translating a Language that Just isn’t English
Indiana University hosted an seminar addressing Finnish literary translation for students and faculty in North America with the support of The Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI), the Finnish Literature Exchange (FILI), and the Department of Central Eurasian Studies (CEUS).
Researching Uyghur Migration from China to Soviet Central Asia in the 1950s and 1960s
Gulnisa Nazarova, John D. Soper Senior Lecturer of Uyghur in the Indiana University Department of Central Eurasian Studies is currently undertaking a major research project to collect the oral histories of Uyghurs who crossed the Sino-Soviet border in the 1950s and 1960s. Her research report shares some initial findings from this project.
Kristoffer Rees, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Indiana University East, introduces his ongoing recent research into memory politics in Kazakhstan and shares the various ways collaboration with the Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center has better enabled him to raise the prominence of Central Asia on campus and in the curriculum.
Aynur Performs at the Lotus World Music and Arts Festival
Noted Kurdish vocal artist Aynur performed as part of the 25th Annual Lotus World Music and Arts Festival. Her interpretation of folk music resonated with the audience and demonstrated that music bridges cultures and builds communities.
Preserving the Fierman Newspaper Archive of Central Asian Newspapers
The Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center is funding the long-term preservation of William Fierman's collection of newspapers from Central Asia. This project will ensure that researchers in the future will have reliable access to an invaluable resource documenting the region in recent decades.
The Baltic and Finnish Student Association (BAFSA) Promotes Engagement in Regional Cultures
This semester the Baltic and Finnish Studies Association has been planning numerous exciting events to celebrate and promote awareness of this region. BAFSA reaches out not only to students but also to faculty and the local community to celebrate Baltic and Finnish culture.
