The Global Literacy Invitations project is designed for elementary teachers and held on the campus of Indiana University Bloomington. In a world full of both hopeful and tragic events, it is the duty of teachers in a global community to engage in understanding and empathizing globally. Global Literacy Invitations is an approach that integrates literacy, social studies and the new Global Literacy Standards for Indiana. Global Literacy invitations have long been used in classrooms at Indiana University, and they have been successful at getting preservice teachers to think about how they can internationalize the elementary curriculum in meaningful ways.
In the fall of 2016, the first cohort of Indiana teachers agreed to participate in the Global Literacy Invitation Project. Because of the great success of the project, we were pleased to offer the Global Literacy Invitation Workshops again in the fall of 2018. The workshop leader, Leana McClain, has found children’s books to be a powerful way to connect children with global phenomenon and to promote an understanding of our interconnectedness. A team of three MCCSC teachers who participated in the first Global Literacy Invitations Workshops served as teacher leaders for the 2018/2019 workshops. They were excited to share their love of global children’s books and quality integration of literacy with social studies and other subject areas so that teacher participants can tailor them to their own classroom curriculum.
