Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships

Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships are awarded to universities in order to promote the language and area studies training of undergraduate and graduate students who intend to make their careers in government service, higher education, or other employment where knowledge of foreign cultures is a prerequisite for success. Only US citizens and permanent residents are eligible for FLAS fellowships. Students may apply for and receieve a FLAS even if they have already receieved an award for the same degree program (BA, MA, PhD, etc.).

The Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center is accepting applications for the study of the following languages in the 2020-2021 academic year:  Azerbaijani, Dari, Estonian, Finnish, Hungarian, Kazakh, Kurdish, Kyrgyz, Mongolian, Pashto, Persian, Tajik, Tatar, Tibetan, Turkish, Turkmen, Uyghur, and Uzbek.

Summer 2020 and Academic Year 2020-21 Deadline: January 31, 2020

Important criteria for FLAS eligibility:

  • Ph.D students who plan to take qualifying exams during the upcoming academic year and students who have completed their required course work are not eligible for a FLAS award from the Center.
  • Undergraduates cannot apply for a FLAS for introductory-level language classes.
  • Per new regulations established by the Department of Education, graduate students may receive a fellowship for study of a language at the beginning level only if they have achieved advanced proficiency in another language of their area of specialization, and if learning a second language of that world area is necessary for the student’s overall training and expertise. Please consult with the FLAS coordinator for the unit that will be handling your FLAS application, if necessary.

1. Academic Year FLAS

Undergraduate FLAS

Each fellowship covers the academic year, providing a $5,000 stipend plus maximum tuition award of $10,000 or actual tuition if lower. Undergraduate students have to be enrolled in intermediate-level language instruction (second-year level) or higher as well as in area studies courses (at least one each semester) during the period of the award. The choice of area studies courses has to be approved by IAUNRC. Students who receive FLAS for the intermediate level of a language will be asked to continue on to the advanced level the following academic year or summer.

Graduate FLAS (for students of Arts & Sciences and Professional Schools)

Each fellowship covers the academic year, providing a tuition award for up to 12 credits of coursework each semester (a total of 24 credits) and a stipend of $15,000. 90% of charges will be covered for an in-state and 95% for an out-of-state fellowship recipient. Health insurance will be provided for graduate awardees. FLAS fellows must undertake full-time study during the period of the award and be enrolled in intermediate-level language instruction (second-year level) or higher as well as in area study courses (at least one each semester). The choice of area studies courses has to be approved by the IAUNRC.

All FLAS applications must include:
  • FLAS application
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Three letters of recommendation, at least one of which should address the applicant's abilities in foreign-language training
  • Statement on language training and proposed program of study

All applicants must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application and request to have the results sent to Indiana University.

2. Summer FLAS for Non-IU Language Instruction:

Title VI FLAS fellowships may be awarded to an Indiana University student for summer language instruction in an established program at another institution (in the U.S. or abroad) in a language or level of language study not available at IU SWSEEL. The award includes a fee remission and a stipend.
